Words of wisdom for today

Discernment, the forgotten gift

Should believers in these days be concerned about discernment? This word discerning is actually used in scripture, I have listed just one here for the purpose of being brief:

(1Co 12:10)  “To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:”

There are two interesting things to notice in this verse the first is that this was talking about spiritual gifts. I believe that the I Corinthian passage deals with the gifts given to individual believers and of these there are two types those that are permanent and those that are transitory, that is were only necessary for a short period of time. Of these discernment was the first type, that is it extends beyond New Testament times. The reason for this is that it has the purpose of making believers aware of things that they need to be aware of for spiritual safety. Even in this case I would not make any kind of claim for this, but recognize the need for discernment extended beyond the early church. The word for spirit here refers not to the Holy Spirit, but to the things concerning the spirit of this world. There are things going on in our world that are dangerous to the welfare of God’s children in this world and the real necessity of warning must be put forth urgently and without stopping. The word discernment here has the meaning of judicial estimation, being composed of the preposition for through and the word for judgment.  judicial estimation means to give sound judgment as to what the evidence shows and means along with possible action. The evidence for instance in this world today shows that the church is dying and that true believers are being forced into confrontation of the values of this present age, even if it is unto death. Jesus is coming soon and I would ask what will you tell Him when you see Him? Are you ready for the soon appearance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
